William Markley Jr. Obituary

William F. Markley Jr. 83 of Carlisle PA passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024 in the Church of God Home Carlisle under Hospice Care.

Bill was born on January 1, 1941, in Huntsdale PA, Cumberland County. He was the fourth son of William F Markley and Irma (Sennett) Markley.

He graduated in 1959 from Big Spring High School where he played guard on Big Spring's first football team. He met his wife in 9th grade and would have been married for 62 years on May 27.

He retired from the PPG Shipping Dept after 32 years of service. He was strong in his convictions and didn't throw anything away, still owning the first car he purchased. Bill loved his family and was always there for his brothers and sister. He loved to fish, collect Autumn Leaf dishes and work on old cars.  One of his greatest joys was being able to go to Canada fishing with his son and granddaughter. Bill cheered for Notre Dame, the Raiders and Dale Earnhardt. Over several years and with lots of hard work he was able to restore the Nyquist Offy Sprint Car driven by many different drivers, including Joie Chitwood.  The car is now in the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing located in York Springs, PA.  The car is displayed with photos and the complete racing history. Bill was a lifetime member of the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing and the National Autumn Leaf Collectors Club.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Roger, Richard, Marlin a sister Charlotte and stepbrother Kevin. He is survived by his wife Cinda, daughter Darla Markley of Mechanicsburg, son Darnell of Carlisle, granddaughters Kareston Markley (Zach Day), of San Diego, Madison Markley of Virginia and one great grandson Myles and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the Nurses and Doctors in the ICU at UPMC Carlisle, the staff at the Church of God Home and Homeland Hospice for the wonderful care they provided Bill.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing, PO Box 688. Mechanicsburg, PA  17055-0688.
