Robert E. Smith, 89, of Shippensburg passed away Friday August 22, 2025 in his home. 

    He was born January 18, 1936 in Newville a son of the late Clair L. and Viola Bloser Smith. 

    Mr. Smith was a 1955 graduate of Newville High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, and had worked as a farmer for 38 years. He had also been a North Newton Township supervisor, was on the Planning Commission, as well as the North Newton Township Park Board of Directors. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Newville, where he had served on many committees, and was a member of the Am Vets. 

    Robert is survived by his wife of 66 years Margaret Rolar Smith, three children Karen (Harold) Hamilton, Denise (Don) Russell, and Robert (Gretchen) Smith II, seven grandchildren Dana (David) McLouth, Michael Hamilton, Declan Smith, Ryan Russell, Wyatt Horst, Savannah Horst, and Caroline Horst; eight great-grandchildren Kayla Russell, Aiden Russell, Barrett Hamilton, Saxton Hamilton, Coleson Hamilton Dax McLouth, Vana Horst, and Wiley Horst. 

    He was preceded in death by his granddaughter-in-law Jennifer Hamilton. 

    A viewing will be held Thursday August 28, 2025 from 10 to 11 AM in Zion Lutheran Church, 51 W. Main Street Newville. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Thursday in the church with Rev. Michael Faust officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Newville.
