L.  Eugene “Gene” Shughart, 92, of Carlisle passed away Saturday September 14, 2024 in his home surrounded by his family.

   He was born July 16, 1932 in Carlisle a son of the late Norman Philip and Esther Ellen Miller Shughart.

    Gene had worked as a farmer, a milk hauler, and a mechanic having owned his own garage, as well as working for Rufe Chevrolet.

    He was an avid hunter, and he belonged to the Middlesex Sportsman's Club, the Turnpike Ramblers, and the CPCA Square Dance Association. He had been a member of the Midnight Pickers Band, and attended South Fairview Church of God.

   Gene was preceded in death by his first wife Mary L. Baninger “Bannie” Shughart, and is survived by his second wife Jane Chronister Rhoads-Shughart.

    He is also survived by three children Charles E. Shughart and his wife Victoria, Linda L. Miller and her husband Jim, and Russell L. Shughart and his wife Betty, 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren; four step children Richard E. Rhoads and his wife Debra, Robert L. Rhoads and his wife Donna, Bette J. Newcomer and her husband John, and Kelly L. Lombardo and her husband Barry Jr. ; 8 step grandchildren, and 11 step-great-grandchldren; and one sister Mary E. Shughart Gensler and her husband Richard.

    In addition to his parents and his first wife he was preceded in death by one son Rodger L. Shughart, two sisters Kathleen Rynard, and Genevieve Hoover, and three brothers Creedin Shughart, Levern Shughart, and Neil Shughart, and one great-granddaughter.

   A funeral service will be held Tuesday September 24, 2024 at 11 AM in the South Fairview Church of God 1212 Centerville Road, Newville with the Rev. Kevin Dunlap officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Memorial Gardens, Carlisle.
