Jack Ronald Holmes

From Upper Strausburg, PA

July 15, 1933 - August 30, 2025

92 years old

 

Jack was a fun-loving guy who loved his family, especially his wife of over 70 years, Nancy. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and had a general love for the outdoors. Jack faithfully served in the US Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict.

Jack was born in Harrisburg, PA to Frank (aka Pete) and Evelyn Holmes. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Jill Shoop.

He will be deeply missed by his surviving children, Mark (Becky) Holmes, Rick (Cindy) Holmes, Dave (Chris) Holmes and Tom (Kim) Holmes. Jack loved his 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and loved watching them all have the same passion for the outdoors as he instilled in his own children.

Many thanks to all the caring people at Green Ridge Village who welcomed him and Nancy into their home and took wonderful care of them for the past 2 years.

Jack was an outstanding athlete at Highspire High School, lettering in 3 sports. After high school, he joined the Coast Guard and served during the Korean Conflict. When he was preparing to exit the service, he was invited to try out as a catcher for the Baltimore Orioles baseball team, but he had other passions, mainly starting his life with Nancy.

It was very important to Jack that he taught his 4 boys respect for the outdoors, their wives and people in general. He also taught them, and many others, good hunting ethics, fishing skills and his love for the great outdoors. He had a flair with words and documented hunting camp and all the stories that came with that experience. We couldn't have asked for a better Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather or friend.

A private graveside service will be held at Keefer’s Cemetery in Upper Strasburg on Thursday, September 4th. A Celebration of Life Open House will be held on Sunday, November 2nd from 1pm to 5pm at the home of his son, Tom Holmes, at 314 Mountain View Road, Shippensburg, PA.
