Frances E. (Finkey) Kennedy Obituary

Frances Edna Kennedy passed into eternal glory on August 27, 2024, at Providence Place of Chambersburg. She was 90. Until 2021 she was a lifelong resident of Newville and was currently a member of Newville First Church of God.

Frances was the youngest daughter of the late Charles and Mabel Finkey, and sister of Leroy Finkey, Janet Finkey, and Helen Finkey Myers, all deceased. She attended Newville High School and was married to Harvey Kennedy from 1951 until his death in 1995. She had three sons, Steve Kennedy (wife Cheryl) and Wayne Kennedy of Newville, and Boyd Kennedy (wife Brenda) of Shippensburg.

A stay-at-home mom until her sons were all in elementary school, Frances then worked for many years at Reeves-Hoffman Division and made lifelong friendships during that time. She was an expert seamstress, making clothes for her family and doing mending for others after ending her full-time outside employment. She pursued other crafts as well, including making baskets that she sold. Cooking during her outside employment years was mostly utilitarian, but later in life she enjoyed providing meals for family dinners and events; her macaroni and cheese, as well as peach pies, were favorites. She loved watching birds at her or others' feeders.

Nothing meant more to Frances than her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and she provided child care well into her 80's. She had a generous heart, was a good sport, and encouraged learning in the children she cared for.

During her time at Providence Place she was well loved by Providence Place and Hospice staff, who often mentioned that she was a favorite resident, and she was given attentive and affectionate care.

In addition to her husband, Frances was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Renee Lee Kennedy and Melissa Dawn Kennedy; a great-grandson, Weston Jacob Orner; and a great-great-granddaughter, Everleigh Grace Rhoads. She is survived by her three sons; grandchildren Christopher and Douglas Kennedy, Brooke Orner, Beth Bryant, and Charity Bixler; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Newville First Church of God on Friday, August 30, at 4 p.m. With visitation beginning at 3 p.m. And interment in the Doubling Gap Church of God cemetery.
