David Hockensmith

    David “Bruce” Hockensmith Sr., 87, of Newville, Pa passed away August 3, 2021 at the Church of God Nursing Home in Carlisle, Pa. He was born November 24, 1933 to the late Ira and Daisy (McMullen) Hockensmith.

    He was on cradle role at Newville 1st Church of God to begin his walk with Jesus. He was later a member of McClure’s Gap Church of God for many years serving on council and other works. In his later life he returned and became a member of Newville First Church of God.

    Bruce was a Stone Mason/ brick layer most of his life and you can see his work throughout Central PA. He worked many years for Rynard and Sheaffer and was self-employed for several years. Hockensmith Men have big hands and his were meant to do beautiful stone work. He also worked several years surveying with his Nephew Eugene before retiring.

    Bruce loved hunting, fishing, gardening, his orchard, farming, camping, visiting family, Church, playing cards, fish fry's, reunions and telling stories. He loved that all of his children lived within 15 minutes of him and each other.

    Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers Thomas (Reba), Robert, Chester (Gladys), Leroy “Pete” (Velva), Albert (Janet), James (Kay); and sisters Esther Lehman (Clair), Ethel Hoover (Eugene) and son-in-law George Barrick.

    He is survived by his Loving wife Evelyn (Armold) Hockensmith (56 years), Brother O. Wayne Hockensmith, and sister-n-law’s Betty & Isabel Hockensmith.

    His 4 children Sandra Rhoads (John), David Hockensmith Jr (Susan), Dennis Hockensmith (Angie) and Norma Barrick all of Newville. His Grandchildren: Jason (Rebecca), Jeff, Jennifer (Justin), Matthew (Kendra), Phillip (Anna); His Step-Grandchildren: Heather (Tom), Bobby, Scott and Jessi

    His Great Grandkids: Josh, Alisha, Randy, Ethan, Kylee; Michael, Hailey, Janelle, Mikayla, Patrick, Colton

 His Step-Great Grandkids - Avery, Nathan, Hannah, Lily and one Great Great Granddaughter - Harlee

along with many Nephews and Nieces from his family and his wife's family.

    Viewing will be held at Egger Funeral Home 15 W Big Spring Ave, Newville, Pa from 12 -2 pm on Friday August 6, 2021. Service will be at 2 pmfollowed by graveside service at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens Carlisle.
