Charles L. “Bill” “Smitty” Smith, 80, passed away Thursday June 25, 2020 in UPMC West Shore Hospital. 

   He was born June 17, 1940 in Newville the son of the late Lester Charles and Dorothy Marie Thrush Smith. 

    Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Sarah Jane Shoemaker Smith.

    He had worked for the PA Turnpike, the Newville Police Department, had worked as a school policeman, and had retired from Penn Dot. 

    Bill was a life member of Friendship Hose Co. #1 of Newville, was a member of Cumberland County Fire Police Association, Williams Grove Steam Engine association, and Green Spring First Church of God.   

    In addition to his wife he is survived by three daughters Cathy Gilbert, Penny Rowe, Judy Troop, and one son Charles Smith Jr.; 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; one sister Jean Mooney, and three brothers Larry Smith, Paul  Smith, and Donnie Smith.

    He is preceded in death by one brother Ronnie Smith and one sister Patsy Graham.

   A viewing will be held Wednesday July 1, 2020 from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM in the Egger Funeral Home 15 W. Big Spring Ave. Newville.  A funeral service will follow at 1:30 PM with Rev. Phillip Steele officiating Burial will follow in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens Carlisle.
