Betty A. (Andrews) Mortlock Obituary

Betty Andrews Mortlock, age 90, passed away on November 25, 2024, in Green Ridge Village, Newville, PA. She was the widow of Clarence Edward (Ed) Mortlock who died in 2021.

Betty was born in West Orange, NJ, to Ruth (Hinton)and Charles Jacob Andrews. She spent her early years in the village of Lawyersville, NY, and attended public school in Cobleskill, where her eldest sister was teaching kindergarten. After moving to Wilmington Delaware ,where her father was employed by the Diamond Ice and Coal Company, Betty completed her elementary and High School education in the Mt. Pleasant School District, graduating as class salutatorian in 1951. Receipt of a scholarship to the University of Delaware enabled her to receive a BS Ed. and prepare for career in teaching. However, it was there she met her future husband, Ed, and she followed him in his vocation after marriage in 1955. They were married for 66 years.

During the frequent transfers of Ed’s employment with General Electric, Betty was actively involved with raising their two sons; it wasn’t until her sons were in High School, did she pursue a part time office job with the Middletown Twp.(Delaware County, PA.) Sewer Authority. She also worked for H&R Block, preparing taxes in the Delaware County area. While residing in Media PA, Betty held an active life in the Media Presbyterian Church, beginning service as an Elder, teaching youth, singing in the choir, and holding office in the Women’s Association as well as Church Women United.

Upon Ed’s early retirement in 1990, they moved to Murphy, North Carolina and built a lakefront home in the Bear Paw Resort where they enjoyed the pleasures of boating and fishing. They were also active in the effort to obtain funds for infrastructure with taxes rather than dues. Betty helped to prepare the way with meetings in Asheville concerning the regulatory statutes, while Ed built docks and managed the community pool and maintenance of roads. Their church home was 30 mi. away but Betty led Bible studies, cooked food for the suppers, and helped to organize a small choir to offer praise each Sunday.

In 2000, she and Ed moved to Green Ridge Village, Newville. In the early years of the Green Ridge Village Auxiliary, she held various offices, similarly in committees of the Independent Living Association, including singing with the Village Aires, all while enjoying the company of her cats. She was an active member of the Big Spring Presbyterian Church for 23 years, where a service will be held. Burial will be private at Big Spring Cemetery.

She is survived by son David (wife Karin) Mortlock, Mt. Laurel, NJ; son Richard (wife Lauren) Mortlock Galloway, NJ; grandsons ,Christian Mortlock (partner Sara), Baltimore, MD; Justin Mortlock (wife Jolene), Myrtle Beach, SC; granddaughters Patricia Knight (husband Matthew), Chicago IL) Anna Mortlock (partner Connor), Philadelphia, PA; and great grandson, Leo Mortlock, Myrtle Beach, SC.
