Thomas R. Helman

July 8, 1933 ~ September 23, 2017 (age 84) 84 Years Old

     Thomas R. Helman, 84, of Newville died Saturday September 23, 2017 in his home.

     He was born July 8, 1933 in Marion, PA the son of Donald and Florene Gift Helman.

     Tom is survived by his wife of 62 years Naomi Burkholder Helman.

     Mr. Helman had served in the U.S. Army, graduated from Shippensburg State College, and received his masters from Penn State University. He taught History and Social Studies in the Cumberland Valley School District for 36 years., while also serving as the Social Studies Supervisor.

     He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, in Newville where he had taught Sunday School for 50 years, and sang in the choir for 60 years. Big Spring F & AM Lodge #361, where he was a Past Master, and Chaplain. He was a member of the Zembo Shrine. He also belonged to the Newville Lions Club and had received the Lions Club Humanitarian Award. He also belonged to the Junior Order of United Mechanics. He was a avid golfer, and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

     In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters Beth Ebersole and her husband Jeff of Akron, OH, Cathy Hartsock and her husband Ken of Mechanicsburg; one sister Nancy Stafford and her husband Bill of FL; four grandchildren Jeremy Ebersole and his wife Rachel, Kristen Ebersole Snoke and her husband Adam, Brock Hartsock, and McKensey Hartsock, two step-grandchildren Nathan Hartsock and his wife Amanda, and Nicole Hartsock Renaud and her husband Jon; and one great grandson Derek Snoke.

     He was preceded in death by two brothers Ben and Ed Helman.

     A visitation will be held Friday September 29, 2017 from 3 to 5 PM in Zion Lutheran Church 51 W. Main St. Newville. A Masonic service will be held at 3 PM in the church. A funeral service will be held in the church at 5 PM with Rev. Amy Wagner officiating. Burial will follow in Newville Cemetery.
