What can I say about Gil. Here goes.
He was one of three of the best teachers I ever had. I would hear other students making complaints and I could never figure that out. Many times when I finished a test or something going on he would come back and sit in the open seat behind me at the rear of the classroom. We would talk.
Wouldn't you know that after graduation in 1965 I went to work at Colonel Denning State Park June 30, 1966. There he was bigger than life helping there. The first thing we did that day was pick up the garbage. John McCoy was driving the dump truck and I was on the back taking the cans. We were in the Camping Area and John took off and I slid off the back right onto my back and head. Gil was the first one to grab me to see if I was alright. I was just fine. He never forgot that over the years when we met he would always bring that up and we would laugh about that. I would stop in and see him from time to time and even set in his driveway to watch the kids leaving school and doing bad things in their cars. He loved that and I loved him. He was the best of friends. I didn't find out until too late that he had passed. I am so sorry I was unable to come to see you all at the time. Just know that you can be proud of your dad. He was an asset to the community and he will be sorely missed.
GOD Bless you for your loss. Jerry & Phyllis Henneman

Gil was a long-time colleague at Big Spring; not only as a good teacher but also as an active contributor at church and in the community. A really rare treat was being able to teach his children as students and then to grow up with them as young adults. His wonderful children are a tribute to him and those memories that continue to this day.

What a wonderfully kind man he was. I was blessed to have had a little time with him while he was here, and I remember him very fondly. God bless you all during this difficult time of temporarily saying good-by to him. May your shared memories and time together as family and friends give you all great comfort and peace. I will remember you in my prayers.
