George Barrick Obituary

George Allen Barrick of Newville, Pa went home to be with the Lord on November 9, 2019 with his wife of 25 years Norma Hockensmith Barrick by his side. George was born in Carlisle, Pa December 12, 1954 to Dean and Effie (King) Barrick who both preceded him in death along with his sister Shirley Sheriff. He missed them so much and can now be reunited.

George was a devoted dad to Heather Barrick Nickel who was born in 1976 to him and his 1st wife, Marcia Shank. He was so proud of his son-in-law, Thomas E. Nickel, and his service to the United States Air Force. George was also the proud dad of Phillip Quinn Barrick who was born to him and Norma in 1998. He also had become quite attached and proud of Phillip’s girlfriend Anna Nippert and her cat Braveheart.

George is survived by his brothers Gary, Dennis, and Michael Barrick and lots of nieces and nephews. He was proud to be a great-great uncle. He was beloved by his in-laws David and Evelyn Hockensmith. They enjoyed fishing, playing games, canning, and cooking together.

George started his working career at the age of 12 at Sunnyside Restaurant and became the chef as an adult. His passion was cooking for and feeding anyone he could, including pets. He also ran the High stores years ago and his final years before his disability was working at Carlisle Syntec. His crab cakes and Greek Pastitsio will be greatly missed.

George loved to play any kind of games or cards even though he usually lost. He also was an avid Houston Oiler/Tennessee Titan fan which could be just as frustrating. George would be outside anytime he could, no matter how sick he was. It could be working in the garden, mowing grass at Church, building, repairing something, or really anything that would get him outside and tan. The nurses were always jealous of his tan. The power of prayer over the duration of his illness helped keep him with us many times over. His “strong like bull attitude” didn’t hurt.

George loved sharing his passion for music with his kids. He loved to sing and dance, going to concerts, and being in the choir at Newville First Church of God along with being an Elder of the Church. He was a former member of McClure’s Gap Church of God. He was a longtime member of the Fraternal order of Eagles.

His viewing will be held at the Newville First Church of God 475 Shippensburg Road, Newville, Pa 17241 from 1:30 pm until 3 pm on Wednesday November 13, 2019 followed by his service @ 3 pm, with Rev. Wayne Good officiating. Refreshments and fellowship will be provided after service. The burial will be for immediate family on Thursday at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens.

Donations can be made to “Paw Packs” c/o Newville 1st Church of God 475 Shippensburg Road, Newville, Pa 17241 to help feed the hungry children in our local communities.
