Lillie M. (Mikesell) Porter

September 10, 1931 ~ December 10, 2016 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Lillie M. Porter, 85, daughter of Irene Faught and Paul Mikesell passed away on December 10, 2016 in Newville, PA.

A “Celebration of Life” function will be held on January 14 from 2-5 pm at the VFW in Newville, PA. This will be a time to share stories, memories and for friends, family and associates to celebrate Lillie’s vibrant life.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA on September 10, 1931, Lillie moved with her family to Newville in 1943. She graduated from Newville H.S. in 1949 with the Senior Athletic Award. Her heartfelt desire was to become a gym teacher but instead, she went to Central Penn Business School and graduated with an accounting degree in 1953.

Lillie was married to William J. Porter (deceased), a high school teacher and WWII veteran on November 26, 1952. They were married for 54 years.

Lillie’s career life was diverse. She was an Executive Secretary and then Lead Accountant for Masland’s Carpet in Carlisle; a stay at home mom, a Penn Dot Information Specialist, a Real Estate Broker and a proprietor of a Christmas tree business.

Lillie was also elected as Secretary-Treasurer of West Pennsboro Township. She was politically active as the Democratic Committee Woman and Poll Watcher for years. She registered to vote in 1949 and was very proud that she never missed an election: local, state or national--even while in hospice care.

Lillie was an artist and enjoyed working with oils and particularly loved painting local landscapes. She was also a true animal lover. She had many pets through the years, took care of others’ pets and fed and cared for stray animals and wildlife. She volunteered for a local animal shelter thrift store until its closing.

Lillie is survived by her daughters Carol Erb and husband Chuck Erb and Anne Harrison; her grand-children Lorna Erb, Leta, Nicole and Laura Harrison; her great grand-children Kendall Williams and Arielle Thronton and many beloved friends.

The family welcomes donations to the American Cancer Society or the ASPCA. The family wishes to thank In Your Home Care, Christian Companions, Hospice of Central PA and all of Lillie's friends, neighbors, family members and private caregivers that made it all possible to keep her in her beloved home with her animal friends.
